Neural Correlates of Episodic Memory Consolidation During Slow-Wave Sleep

Ian Wright, Mei-Ling Chen, Diego Alvarez · Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience · 2025

We investigate the hippocampal–neocortical dialogue underlying episodic memory consolidation during slow-wave sleep. Using simultaneous EEG–fMRI in 64 participants, we show that the coupling of slow oscillations and sleep spindles predicts overnight retention gains. Our findings refine the active systems consolidation hypothesis and identify spindle–slow-oscillation coupling as a candidate biomarker for memory health.

Compositional Reasoning Emerges from Curriculum Pretraining in Foundation Models

Priya Nadarajah, Tomás Becker · Open Machine Intelligence · 2025

We present evidence that compositional reasoning ability in foundation models is strongly modulated by the ordering of pretraining data. Across 14 model scales, a curriculum that interleaves symbolic and natural-language tasks yields a 23% relative improvement on held-out compositional benchmarks.

Revised Estimates of Southern Ocean Carbon Flux Under Warming Scenarios

Sofia Markham · Climate Systems Letters · 2024

Combining autonomous float observations with CMIP6 ensembles, we revise Southern Ocean carbon uptake estimates downward by 0.3 PgC/yr relative to prior assessments, with implications for global carbon budget closure.

Sleep Spindle Coupling Declines with Age and Predicts Memory Loss

Mei-Ling Chen, Ian Wright · Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience · 2025

In a longitudinal cohort of 310 adults, we show that age-related decline in spindle–slow-oscillation coupling mediates the relationship between age and episodic memory performance.
